On February 23, 2009, the Sarasota city staff started using Twitter, the social media website, to communicate things like holiday closings, storm warnings, garbage pick-up schedule changes, programming announcements for ‘Access Sarasota’ and more.

Since Twitter is online and free to use, it doesn’t cost the taxpapers any printing or mailing.

Add in the fact that Twitter messages are sent in real-time, so there is no lag time to get the word out – particularly important for emergency messages like storm shelter information.

I guess one thing that is challenging is the fact that tweets (posts) are limited to 140 characters.

So choose your words wisely and be a judicious editor. As one copywriter once proclaimed, “I would have written a shorter ad if I had more time.”

Other cities across America have used Twitter and many more are sure to join in this cost-effective method of getting the word out.

So tweet away, cityfolk. It’s the wave of the future in Sarasota—and elsewhere.
