‘Stop words’ are hurting your SEO efforts, so stop it.

by wordwrangler on October 13, 2009

What are ’stop words?’ They are words that are used so often that they have no value in the eyes of the search engines. Examples include a, I and of. But there are dozens more actually.

It’s fine to use these words in the text of your articles or post (actually, it would be kind of hard not to), but don’t use them in your meta titles, meta tags, header tags or permalinks. Using them in these places will diminish the SEO value of them.

Great post! For those using WordPress.org, there’s a great plugin that takes those pesky stop words out of your URL. It’s called SEO Slugs.
It’s helped me out quite a bit!
